McAfee LiveSafe (started on 7/15/2016)
We just bought a new Dell Inspiron 3250 in July 2016 and it came with LiveSafe. In defense of McAfee, we had just renewed the subscription to McAfee Viruscan in May 2016 and after asking for a supervisor (and we've subscribed for ten years), they reimbursed the full renewal cost.
On 8/24/2016, the computer started doing some odd things (Win 10) that seemed to change day to day. Windows Task Manager would not open via any means, Command Prompt (Admin) would not launch, etc. A full scan by McAfee LiveSafe produced no problems (it reports there have been no problems since July). We disabled the McAfee Firewall and Virus and Spyware Realtime Scanning and enabled Windows Defender. Boom! - Trojan: Win32/Kovter.c!reg and /Kovter.a!gen, .reg affects the registry and .gen relates to threads. After a second scan it was clean, and after a reboot it was clean, but we were still concerned.
That's when we got a free version of Malwarebytes and it discovered Rootkit.Fileless.MTgen plus Trojan.Fileless.MTgen and Rootkit.Fileless.MTgen in a batch file located in c:Usersuser_nameAppdataLocal235356f named 15e9a04.bat. I am not an expert but that appears to be a batch file that can be triggered from a Trojan. So the pc was re-infecting itself. Had I not tried Malwarebytes this would continue. Something totally missed by Windows Defender.
We are of the opinion that McAfee LiveSafe won't see another yearly renewal as we now have to scan regularly with other products.
- Ncafee product unfit for purpose

You did well in using Malwarebytes. Windows Defender is really a so-so program and I have disabled it on all my machines.
I use Malwarebytes and the free Avast edition plus a couple of other free programs which I run every few days---superantispyware and ccleaner. I always uninstall McAfee whenever it comes bundled with a new computer---make sure you download and run the "clean uninstall" for McAfee or any other antivirus program in order to clean out all left over files that remain when you uninstall from the control panel's remove programs, etc. The more programs you have starting up and running in the background on a machine the more likely you will have conflicts and problems. You might want to also do a web search and find out how to turn off all the tracking and other privacy invading nonsense that comes with Windows 10.
I have stuck with Win 7 and intend to do so for as long as I can in order to avoid what I hear is a terrible Windows 10 operating system. Good luck.
